BIM in controlling? It’s about time!

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has long been established in planning, but is still the exception in project controlling. This is precisely where there is great potential: better data bases, linked analyses and integrated cost-time control.

In the current issue of the trade journal bauen aktuell, Carina Pfrommer and Fabienne Rau provide an insight into the current status and prospects of model-based management. They explain why the integration of BIM into controlling has hardly been successful so far – and what conditions need to be created for it to work.

The focus is on topics such as data quality, interfaces between planning and controlling and the need for clear responsibilities. Our colleagues show that model-based controlling has long been technically feasible. The decisive factor now is organizational integration and a common understanding of the added value of digital data in Project Management.

By combining BIM and controlling, forecasts, scenarios and early warning indicators could be derived directly from the model in future. This will make Project Controlling data-based, transparent and forward-looking.
