Energy-efficient refurbishment of the Battonnhöfe in Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main is a prime example of the challenges facing inner-city residential districts: sharply rising energy prices and an ageing building stock combined with high demand for affordable housing. Against this backdrop, the Battonnhöfe ensemble on Battonnstrasse has been undergoing extensive energy-efficient refurbishment and modernization since 2021.

The ensemble comprises eleven residential buildings with a gross floor area of around 15,225 m² and is being implemented in four construction phases. In addition to energy efficiency upgrades, the aim is also to maintain a stable neighborhood. The construction work will therefore be carried out while the buildings are occupied: residents will temporarily move into temporary apartments within the ensemble and return to their renovated apartments once the work is complete.

This approach places special demands on planning and the construction process. Construction phases, relocations, construction times and usage concepts must be interlinked in such a way that the impact on residents is minimized and energy, social and architectural goals are brought together at the same time.

Under the leadership of Roland Gehron, a THOST project team is responsible for representing the client throughout the project as well as Project Controlling in accordance with German engineering standards, supplemented by continuous client support as well as relocation and tenant management. The first construction phase was completed and put back into use in May 2025.
