New power turnstiles for northern Germany

Home 5 News 5 New power turnstiles for northern Germany

With the multi-terminal hub concept, several direct current connections are being directly linked together for the first time in northern Germany. Projects include the HeideHub, the NordWestHub, the NordHub and the NordOstLink connection. Instead of individual point-to-point connections, power hubs are being created at which several lines are brought together in a direct current switching station.

In this way, a meshed direct current grid is to be established in the future, which will enable the flexible distribution of large quantities of offshore wind power. The first three planned multi-terminal hubs are scheduled for completion by 2034.

THOST has been responsible for multi-project management for this unique European infrastructure program since 2025 – our team manages several large-scale projects in parallel and synchronously. The scope of services includes Schedule Control, reporting as well as interface and quality management.

The start of construction for the HeideHub in Wöhrden and Lieth (Dithmarschen district) was recently celebrated. Commissioning is scheduled for 2030. Planning is underway for the NordWestHub in Ovelgönne (Lower Saxony) with the aim of commissioning in 2031. The NordHub in the municipalities of Agethorst and Mehlbek is also in the preliminary planning stage.

The multi-terminal hubs are a central component of the energy grid of the future. We look forward to supporting TenneT in the implementation of this long-term infrastructure program in a project management capacity.
