THOST steers
Bonn-Niederkassel-Cologne light rail project

With the Bonn-Niederkassel-Cologne light rail project, one of the most important mobility projects on the Rhine is picking up speed. The aim is a new light rail line on the right bank of the Rhine that will connect the three cities in a climate-friendly and efficient way in future – an important contribution to the transport transition in the region.
The design planning for large parts of the Projects should be completed by the end of 2027. The political committees of the cities of Bonn and Cologne and the Rhein-Sieg district will then decide on the final implementation.
THOST has been part of this forward-looking project since April 2025: Under the leadership of Patrycja Brzezinski, the THOST team is responsible for Project Controlling, Quality Assurance and technical consulting for the overall project. The team is also supporting Project Management in awarding the engineering planning services, which are to be put out to tender across Europe.
Extensive environmental impact assessments and accompanying landscape conservation planning have already begun to ensure that the new light rail system is realized in harmony with nature and climate goals. The planned Rhine crossing poses a particular planning challenge, requiring further technical and ecological studies.
This project stands for more quality of life, less traffic and sustainable mobility – a milestone for local public transport in the Rhine region. THOST is looking forward to actively shaping the mobility of tomorrow together with all project partners.
