Stuttgart 21: Restructuring of the Stuttgart rail hub

As part of the Stuttgart 21 construction project, Stuttgart’s existing main station is being converted from an above-ground terminus station into an underground, eight-track through station. This central element of the reorganization of the Stuttgart railroad junction also includes the construction of around 57 kilometers of new railroad line, including a Stuttgart-Ulm high-speed line with a total of nine tunnels and a length of 30 kilometers.

Other measures include the new station at Stuttgart Airport (long-distance and local rail), the double-track connections to the Filderebene, the dismantling of the Gäubahn to Stuttgart-Rohr, a new storage depot in Untertürkheim, the Mittnachtstraße S-Bahn station and the relocation of the Staatsgalerie subway station. The project is known as Stuttgart 21, S21 Stuttgart or S21 Stuttgart-Ulm.

THOST Project Management provided extensive services in the areas of Schedule Control, Lean Management in the Construction Industry and Commissioning Management for this major project in the Stuttgart 21 area. In the planning approval sections 1.2 (Filder Tunnel), 1.5 (Feuerbach/Bad Cannstatt approach) and 1.6a (Upper/Untertürkheim approach), THOST coordinated the finishing and equipment trades (e.g. control and safety technology, overhead lines, energy supply, telecommunications), checked and evaluated scheduling, handled interface management within the tunnel structure and supported the organization of testing and acceptance processes. The application of lean methods (Last Planner System) supported the management of commissioning. THOST was also involved in the preparation of the reporting system for management, group management and political decision-makers.
