Transformation of the Klingenberg cogeneration plant, Berlin

With the conversion of the Klingenberg combined heat and power plant into a modern energy park, Berliner Energy und Wärme GmbH (BEW) is realizing a key project in urban heat transition. Six interlinked sub-projects – including dismantling, infrastructure measures and the construction of a new CHP solid fuel plant – form the basis for a sustainable, climate-friendly heat supply. In addition to replacing fossil heat generators with regenerative systems, an electricity-powered heat pump and the use of waste heat from a planned data center are also being used.

THOST Project Management is supporting BEW in this major project with holistic Project Controlling – among other things by setting up and operating a central PMO (Project Management Office). Our services include the overall coordination of all six sub-projects (including technical backbone, infrastructure, CHP plant, grid connection) as well as schedule, cost and quality management. We are also responsible for coordinating specialist technical planning, drafting tenders, managing contracts and subsequent requirements and providing operational support for approval-related steps in close cooperation with the authorities, monument protection authorities and other stakeholders.

The project is characterized by the simultaneous implementation of a wide range of measures, such as the demolition of listed buildings, maintenance, construction and ongoing operation, which must be structured and coordinated in parallel. The transformation of the site combines the requirements of modern heat generation with the preservation of valuable elements of Berlin’s industrial culture, making it a flagship project for a sustainable heat supply in urban areas.
